about

Written in the vein of a classic protest song, “This Is Where I Stand” is one artist’s attempt at grappling with her family’s tragic history. It describes a return to the site of loss and trauma (in this case, the concentration camps of Nazi Germany) and the attempt to make sense of the incomprehensible.

“This Is Where I Stand,” not surprisingly, is filled with contradiction (“This is where you were trapped, this is where I’m free.”) But there’s also a sense of empowerment: “This is where you could not sing, this is where I could.” It’s a reclamation of one’s traumatic narrative and, above all, a declaration to never let anything like it happen again. With its universal themes and unapologetic folk roots, “This Is Where I Stand” can serve as an anthem for other oppressed peoples and social justice movements.

lyrics

This is where you sat, this is where I stood
This is where you could not sing, this is where I could
This is where your family was stolen from the land
This is where you were this is where I stand

This is where you could not speak, this is where I’ll be
This is where you were trapped, this is where I’m free
This is where your gold was taken from your hands
This is where you were this is where I stand

This is where I’m cold, this is where you bled
This is where I’m going, this is where you fled
This is where you listened and followed a demand
This is where you were this is where I stand
